Project Focus Framework

Building a project-focused organization is not easy, but it is important. The Project Focus Framework is a very practical approach to create project thinking at any level. It is practical because you don't have to change the organization all at once.  Instead, you can work entirely within your on "circle of influence." Not everyone has managerial authority, but eveyone can have leadership authority if they start within their circle of influence.  This is why the Project Focus Framework starts at Skill Set A1 at the bottom left corner.

From easy victories in Skill Set A1, leadership and management skills develop in two different dimensions.  In the horizontal dimension, Management Skill Sets 1, 2 and 3 define the dimension of managing technical performance, schedule performance and cost performance.  In simpler words, these three skills are about getting things done, on time, and within budget.

In the vertical dimension, Leadership Skills Sets A, B and C define a direct "line of sight" between personal effectiveness, team effectiveness, and business results.  These are separate levels of project-focused thinking, but they are logically linked to create team-focused alignment of individuals and organization-focused alignment of teams.

The matrix below is called a framework because, like the steel frame of a building, it provides structure but it doesn't describe all contents.  Leadership and management are huge topics.  So are the myriad topics within classic project management and agile project management.  This framework is a useful way to think about all of it. The most imporant thing to remember is always stay within your circle of influence, and then grow it.
